Value of TIG

Related to country: United States
About this category: Education

I would just like to blog about the efficacy of TIG for student use.  I am a community college instructor, and I believe my students have utilized TIG to move beyond the surface layers of social media that dominate much of youth time and attention.

My students have connected with others, started discussion groups, engaged in volunteer work, and most importantly, critically read about deep and important issues before sharing information with others in well formulated blogs of their own.

Thank you, TIG, for serving as a meaningful social platform!

Yes I do believe every gender should be treated under an equality of opporunity and condition. But.... What is your definition of an "early marriage" ? I oppose premature marriage but early marriage ?

Pilot Goes Live!

Ready, set go! We had an extremely busy week post-Baku getting prepared for the launch of the MIH pilot. Incia finalized our list of participants while Jessica and I coordinated their applications with our team of e-mentors and built the school on TIGed (http://www.takingitglobal.org/tiged/). The evaluation team with CIRCLE at Tufts University was also busy preparing a baseline survey for everyone to take.

On October 13, we went live!

Stay tuned for updaets :)

YES Azerbaijan 2008

I'm happy to report that Make It Happen had a very successful time at the Youth Employment Summit 2008 in Baku, Azerbaijan!

TakingITGlobal was invited to speak about 'Youth Empowerment Through Technology' alongside UNEVOC (International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training) where we presented Make It Happen as a case study. Over the course of our time there, we spoke endlessly about the pilot launch, the power of Web 2.0 to enhance global e-learning, the rise of young social entrepreneurs and the power of young people to affect global social and/or environmental challenges. We met with heads of government bodies from all over the world as well as with lots of local young people who provided meaningful suggestions and encouragement!

In the middle of all the action, we managed to ask a few people a question that continues to linger on my mind:

"If you could make anything happen in the world, what would you do?"

We filmed the responses and hope that they will provide you with some inspiration. You can view them on the homepage :)

Make It Happen Goes to Baku

This week, I’m very lucky to be traveling to Baku, Azerbaijan on behalf of the MIH team! Along with tech-guru Todd Fraser, I will be presenting the e-course as a case study at the Youth Employment Summit.

YES Azerbaijan 2008 is the 4th global Youth Employment Summit and will be hosted by the Republic of Azerbaijan through the Ministry of Youth and Sport. His Excellency, Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan will be hosting the summit in collaboration with the President of Youth Employment Systems Inc., Ms Poonam Ahluwalia. You can learn more here:
http://www.yesweb.org/yes2008/welcome.htm

Make It Happen was chosen as one of the summit’s 12 effective and innovative programs! We will be presenting MIH as a case study during a workshop called Youth Employment Through Technology on Wednesday, September 24. This is a very exciting opportunity for us on the MIH team as we move closer and closer to the application deadline for the pilot! Stay tuned - I’ll be sure to post the presentation here soon.

E-Mentor Online Training Woes

Last week we planned to host three online training sessions with our team of e-mentor superstars. We emailed, we doodled (www.doodle.ch) and we coordinated, but when the time came to make it happen (har har), multiple access barriers prevented most people from joining online ☹

I suppose this is why pilots are valuable for working out bugs and kinks. So, what are the lessons learned?

1) There was a lot of confusion about the time zones. We will be sure to use a scheduling tool that allows us to stipulate time zone differences next time. Sorry guys.

2) Everyone had considerable trouble with compatibility. We will be sure to use an online conferencing tool which is 100% browser-based and does not depend on any third-party software. Our e-mentor Nellie suggested that we use another application called WiZiQ which our tech team will be researching for usability in the coming week. Thanks for the recommendation Nellie!

3) No matter how much you plan, there are always bound to be complications and sometimes, you just need to roll with the punches. For this reason, we posted the training PowerPoint presentation on the blog. Stay posted for more information on future e-mentor training sessions.

Thanks to Rob, Mary Anne and Tala who managed to brave the storm!

Over and out, Emily

Marching Onward!

So, you might be asking yourself: what's new and happening in the TIG office with the e-course?

In short, the answer would have to be EVERYTHING!

I'm really happy to report that we've recruited all of our e-mentors. They are an extremely impressive cross-section of leaders from all over the world, all dedicated to helping nurture the next generation of young changemakers. You will be able to see their bios and pictures here soon!

We are also in the process of developing an evaluation strategy with the help of external evaluation specialists. We received some really promising proposals and it will be interesting to see how we decide to collect and analyze different information to constantly improve ourselves.

And finally, we've been working really hard with our marketing gal, Incia, to promote the e-course as much as possible! She's been busy sending out emails to inboxes everywhere to raise awareness of the e-course. If you want to give her a helping hand, feel free to email her at: mih@takingitglobal.org.

Ok, enough for now :) Emily

Live at last!

For those who have heard about this project for awhile, or who are hearing about it for the first time, WELCOME :)

We have been hard at work with the Make It Happen project all summer in Toronto and I'm so excited to see it go live. It has been incredible to hear the thoughts of so many inspiring young people from all over the world and to incorporate their ideas into the very fabric of this e-course.

I can only hope that the final project serves the interests all of those involved and touches the souls of TIGgers the world over.

On that note here's a little quote that I love: "There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow."
-- Orison Marden.
